I just visited my dentist yesterday and was Astonished to see film x-rays that were hand held to a lamp by my dentist because it is 2011.
Also, the teeth cleaning procedure on my daughter was the paste and buffering. I endured this in 1982. When I asked about it, the hygienist informed me it was because it is safer for children. However, that wasn't the case when she was younger at an entirely state of the art dental office in Florida.
Then we were handed a DVD about the first visit for my younger daughter. Why wasn't this amateur DVD on the website or YouTube? There was a notice included warning that loss or damage would result in a $150 fee. It was approximately 48 cents to replace.
My chikdminder was an instant member of the No Cavities Club. I took a quick snap on my IPhone and said I would send it. But the receptionist explained that the camera (unbeknownst to me if it was at least digital) was not in the office.
Also that the x-rays were not immediately uploaded to any known software. There was an absence of technology that honestly, being so close to Google in Seattle, made me uncomfortable.

The Dentist was very nice. The office was very clean. It seemed like a small family business. I was attracted to that. It even had a website. But now I am not certain that in a free market capitalist society where my dollar is my choice, that I want to waste my time in this archaic dental office.

Good points, Eva. In reality, #3 and #4 might be fairly low level drones. While they acted foolishly, some V or C level person either knew or should have known.

Not sure why this episode upset me more than the last X number of hacks. I guess I've just reached my tipping point. After the first 20 houses in a neighborhood get robbed, it's sort of hard to work up much sympathy for the 21st, when the owners don't bother to lock the front door.

A few additional steps to consider: who is setting up password policies, and how did they allow such easily compromised passwords? Are the security systems audited, ad by whom (and should he/she/they be given the #3 and #4 treatment you mention)? Who is monitoring the site and what was their responsibility?

OMG. I love you. There are too many sheep using social media. They follow the "experts" who use every anti-social trick in the book, and annoy the heck out of the rest of us who use it to make real connections and talk to real people. Not to promote our brand, raise our Klout score, or amass a huge following, but to do just what social media was created to do: make new friends, and stay in touch with people we know.

Thank you for responding. You make a good point--this is a very minor thing in the grand scheme. I think you are correct in that most people in harm's way are not overly concerned with their image on Twitter!

In this case, Pepsi was in a tough spot. A B testing might well have caught this (or shown that my reaction was an anomaly) but they were trying to be topical and post on a fast breaking discussion at a conference.

My suggestion to them would be to not make a half-hearted apology, but to immediately offer a brief explanation (which they did) and then a link to a longer, more in depth discussion of the context of the quote.

Companies need to realize how a seemingly minor blip can cause them big trouble and they should react accordingly. If one person was annoyed enough to post, the chances are good that there were others who felt the same way.

I am not sure I agree with you 100%...While speaking in general terms is a sure fire way to offend someone, I think people who do in fact put their lives on the line for our country every day have bigger things to worry about than what is being posted on the Pepsi Twitter feed.

That being said, I think this issue raises a larger question, and that is what to do about the loss of brand control through the pervasiveness of social media.

In many instances, when dealing with the power of social media, a brand message goes through the marketing equivalent of a game of telephone, where a finely crafted, well thought out, strategic message can be bantered about and kicked around without any control over what comes out the other side...It is like playing craps with your brands identity.

The solution to this problem exists in a good, fully integrated marketing automation solution that allows marketers to give recipients the ability to post to social, and then monitor the effectiveness of campaigns in the social media space.

Simple A B testing in the case of Pepsi should have picked up on any negative buzz associated with this post and may have prevented it from getting onto their twitter feed.

Anyhow, it certainly makes for interesting conversation.
